This papayo from Colombia produced by Luis Anibal Calderon is a natural coffee with notes of Candied papaya,white pear, champagne mango, apricot. We love the pour-over or espresso! De Profundis Papayo is our Halloween release for 2025. The name and illustrations were inspired by one of our favorite spooky films, Suspiria.
Suspiria de profundis means "sighs from the depths", and is a collection of poems by Thomas De Quincey. Levana and Our Ladies of Sorrow is about Levana's experience with three female presences. Mater Lachrymarum (Our Lady of Tears), Mater Suspiriorum (Our Lady of Sighs), and Mater Tenebrarum (Our Lady of Darkness). The three beings become a personification of our human griefs, despair, and insanity. Levana experiences the three "Sorrows" as her companions, but eventually they become stronger than her. Experiencing a tension between her own feminine nurturing instincts and the destructive consequences of her companions. Her companions may have restored her solitude, but the spirits plague her heart until they have unraveled the capacities of her spirit. Levana's life with her companions brings her onto the line between the living and the undead, facing all which is related to the undead, the frightening truths.
Our coffee, De Profundis has a light and fresh flavor profile, with autumnal undertones. It might reflect what happens when we are able to integrate our intuitive side with those three mothers, dissolving the tension of truth, solitude and fear.
